Flexibility, Consistency and Small Batch Sizes are All Advantages for Digital Printing
What are Digital Labels?
Definition: Digital labels are printed by sending an image directly to the printer using a digital file. Digital Labels can be printed for pressure sensitive, cut and stack or in-mold solutions.
Digital Labels Give you More Flexibility!
Digital Labels are great for smaller runs (usually a couple thousand or less) and are also great when you want to print a large number of SKUs that do not share many like characteristics(color, shapes, graphics). Unlike traditional printing, digital printing does not need plates, has much quicker change over times between labels and is very cost effective to print shorter runs. Digital printing is also able to accommodate variable data and shorter lead times better.
Why not Digitally Print Everything?
The main disadvantages to digital printing are currently; digital presses run slower than more conventional presses and the cost of raw materials (especially ink) are much higher. As digital technology continues to improve the cost difference for longer digital runs will decline. However, currently runs of usually a couple thousand or more labels are better suited for conventional printing presses.
Here’s a brief bullet-point overview of the benefits of Digital Labels:
- Cost Efficient for Smaller Run Quantities (usually about 2000 labels or less)
- Cost Efficient for Companies with Ever Changing SKUs and Seasonal items
- Lower Setup Costs(No Plates Required/Faster Changeover Times
- Faster Turnaround Times are Easier to Accommodate
